Should You Use Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent Or A Chemical Solution?
Lemon eucalyptus insect repellent is one of the very few natural based products which can hold its own against the chemical solutions offered by DEET and Picaridin. If you are concerned about the effect of harsh chemicals on your skin, you may be looking for a more natural solution. There has been a great deal of controversy recently concerning natural insect repellents, both from the point of view of their effectiveness, and the way they are treated by some governments of the world.
The European government in particular has gone completely over the top by outlawing the sale of natural insect repellents, if they are advertised as insect repellents. The products can be sold without any problem, just so long as the label only contains the ingredients, and not any claim that the product will be effective against insects. This is a scandalous situation, as there is documented scientific evidence to prove that these solutions do have a significant effect in combating insect problems, even to the extent of deterring mosquito bites.
If you are considering switching to a natural insect repellent, it is worth quantifying the reasons why so you know exactly what you are looking for. There is no doubt that DEET based solutions and Picaridin insect repellent are effective, so you need to know your reasoning behind wanting to use a natural solution. DEET is fundamentally safe, from the point of view of the immediate effect it has on contact with the human skin. Only four deaths have ever been reported which may be attributable to DEET, and the statistics for illness show that it is safer than many food products.
If you were going to use DEET, you would be well advised to use one of the products which uses a plastic polymer to regulate the amount of DEET which comes into contact with the skin over a given period of time. This solution, however, is by no means the only one, and lemon eucalyptus insect repellent is a perfectly valid choice. Although you will need to apply this natural solution twice as often as a DEET based product, you still only need to do so every six hours.
Lemon eucalyptus insect repellent has other advantages over DEET, not the least of these being its less unpleasant odor and the way it feels on the skin. There is not the oily feel of the chemical based products, which can lead to a skin irritation in some people even if the product is one which releases as little DEET as possible. This may only be a minor consideration if you are going into a mosquito infested area, but you are still more likely to apply a solution which is comfortable on the skin, especially if you need it for long term use. This is one of the great benefits of lemon eucalyptus insect repellent.
