DEET Insect Repellent: Should I Use It?

DEET Insect Repellent has shown the best option for prevent bug bites, ensuring the user has a bite free day ahead of him or her. You must realize that this repellent is made through synthetic means. This can mean that many people may have a skin reaction to it when it is applied. Many people won't know of the issue until after they use it. For the people who are wary about using a chemical product such as DEET usually go and search for a more natural means of insect repellent. However, there are none that work as well as DEET does.

Through studies and many surveys that were conducted within the borders of the USA, it has been show that DEET Insect Repellent only negatively affects a very narrow band of people. Out of the many millions of people who have been using DEET, less than a hundred experienced the seizures that were named as one of the side effects of the product. Out of those same millions of people, only four deaths were reported that DEET was suspected in causing. There is more risk with food borne allergies than there is with using DEET for your repellent.

However, this study is not bringing into light any long term effects from using the repellent consistently over any long span of time. Intangible aspects such as sleep, mood, or other such facets that the chemical may effect is not taken into account either. At several National Park's a study was conducted to see the long term effects that DEET held on it's employees. The study suggested there was an effect on their mental facilities that was largely negative. Due to the fact that long term exposure to DEET can have a harmful effect on your mental faculties, it is suggested that it is reserved for when it is needed the most.

Of course, the largest factor many people worry over is the effect DEET Insect Repellent can have when applied to children. Children can and should use DEET when faced with the chance of receiving a bug bite that can potentially cause long term or lasting damage to the child. Though there are still plenty of people worried over the usage risk. Most children who use DEET only in the short term have experienced no effect even if studies have shown there are long term negative effects. There is a risk, but it is considerably insignificant when used for only a short while.

You need to also look at what else is out there in terms of bug repellent when considering the use of DEET Insect Repellent. Some products out there are completely natural in their ingredients. One natural alternative that is available is the oil of the eucalyptus tree. It works almost as well as DEET with no harming side effects. However, this oil and many other natural applications do not last quite as long as DEET does, so it is necessary to set a timer or other way to remind yourself to reapply the oil.
